Grand Théâtre de la ville de Luxembourg
Grand Théâtre de la ville de Luxembourg - 1 Bd Robert Schuman, 2525 Ville-Haute Luxembourg

EN Longterm collaborator of the Théâtres de la Ville Douglas Rintoul returns to Luxembourg with his production of Michael Frayn’s perennially popular Noises Off. Often hailed as the most successful British comedy of the 20th century, this high-energy classic is structured as a play within a play, offering a hilarious behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of a theatre production. The plot revolves around a troupe of actors on a disastrous provincial tour with a mediocre farce called ‘Nothing On.’ As the play progresses, we get to witness the chaos and mishaps that occur on stage and backstage during the rehearsals and performances, including flubbed lines, misplaced props, malfunctioning set pieces, romantic entanglements, and personal rivalries. The play is known for its intricate timing, physical comedy, and fast-paced action, making it a favourite among audiences and theatre practitioners alike. Frayn’s masterful meta-comedy not only deconstructs the conventions of farce but also revels in its absurdity. With its riotous humour and timeless appeal, Noises Off continues to delight and entertain, while exploring the precarious balance between order and chaos and proving that sometimes, the greatest dramas unfold behind the scenes. Luxembourg artist Clio van Aerde designs the set in this first coproduction with the New Wolsey Theatre in Ipswich.
