The Soviet Union in 1937: The idealistic newly-appointed local prosecutor Kornev receives a strange letter from prison, written in blood… In Loznitsa’s haunting film adaptation of Georgy Demidov’s novel, the ominously silent corridors echo with the ghosts of Gogol and Kafka.
