In Extremo is a German medieval metal band that fuses heavy metal sounds with traditional medieval music. Formed in 1995 in Berlin, the band began as two separate projects: a medieval ensemble and a rock band. They eventually merged in 1997 after a live rock concert marked the official start of their unique sound. In Extremo’s innovative blend of electric guitars, bass, drums, and traditional instruments such as bagpipes, shawms, hurdy-gurdy, and lutes has become their signature style.
The band’s repertoire features reimagined versions of well-known medieval ballads alongside a growing collection of original compositions, primarily written in German. Their performances are characterized by vibrant stage costumes and dynamic pyrotechnics, with members adopting distinctive stage names that add theatrical flair to their shows. Notably, the musicians often play multiple instruments, enhancing both the depth and authenticity of their music.

Their early releases, such as the self-titled album informally known as ‘Gold’ because of its cover, quickly became hits within the medieval market circuit.
