Cette description n’existe pas en français.

The lecture explores the development of the recent cooperative movement in Basel. Using concrete examples, it illustrates the interaction between active civil society, existing cooperatives, and politics. The housing crisis caused by rising rents and displacement since 2008 has raised awareness of housing policy issues among a broad population in Basel. This also led to a revival of the idea of non-profit housing development.

For a long time, existing cooperatives had been relatively inactive. However, new housing cooperatives reactivated the regional association and gave it a more political orientation.

The lecture links these practical experiences with theoretical reflections on a de-commodified, self-organised and yet expansive cooperative movement.

This lecture is organised by LUCA as part of the ‘Our New Housing – An Invitation to Cooperate’ exhibition.
